11 th February 2018

Despite a disappointingly low turnout, the day provided the normal high standard
of bowling from both the boys and the girls. For the second year running we
combined the Junior and Senior Finals on the same day. Originally there were
12 Junior entries (8-14 age group) and 6 Senior entries (15-18).
In the Junior round robin singles competition in the morning, due to 2 drop-outs
that reduced the actual number of Juniors to 10, they were left with 2 groups of
three and one group of four. This meant awarding byes to those in the reduced
groups. After a closely fought session, there were two boys with maximum points
so it was decided on shot difference. The boys runner up with +15 was Hayden
Clarke (Worthing Pavilion BC). The winner of the boys singles however, with
+32, was Freddie Cable (Eastbourne IBC). The girls competition was easier to
decide as only one of the four girls won all three games and that was Treana
Smith (Worthing Pavilion BC).
In the Seniors singles competition, as there were only 6 entries they all played
each other in the round robin and as there was only one girl they just played for
overall winner. The only girl, Hannah Maslen (Grattons IBC), was runner up with
3 wins and a draw but the winner was Michael Murphy (Grattons IBC) having
won all 5 games.
In the afternoon they all turned their hand to showing their ability on assorted
skills such as jack rolling, line bowling, controlled weight and beating a shot
which was 2 metres from the ditch. The competition was again closely fought
with 1pt separating the boys winner, James Loader (Horsham IBC) on 43pts from
Hayden Clarke (Worthing Pavilion BC) on 42pts. For the girls, Treana Smith
(Worthing Pavilion BC) was dominant again and on 46pts beat the next nearest
girl by 20pts.
In the Seniors skills girl power came to the fore again with Hannah Maslen
(Grattons IBC) beating all the boys by 10 shots with 51pts.
When the scores from the singles and skills were combined the Overall
Champion of the Juniors with 76pts was Treana Smith beating Hayden Clarke by
4pts. In the Seniors only 2pts separated the winner, Michael Murphy 88pts, from
the runner up Hannah Maslen 86pts.
The presentations were made to the Juniors by the SBA President, John Kinnard
and SWBA Vice President, Brenda Davies. That duty for the Seniors was
undertaken by SCIBA President and SCWIBA President. The attendance of all
these dignitaries shows the importance both Associations place on the bowlers of
the future within the County.
All four will now go forward to the Regional Finals at Horsham IBC on Sunday
29th April where we wish them the best of luck in attempting to reach the National
Finals.
